Justin Kirk, Weeds Interview

This season of Weeds is shaping up to be as darkly humorous as the last - and darkest of all is Justin Kirk’s hilarious character Andy Botwin. We caught Justin for a quick phone chat to discuss Weeds, hot ladies, and cautionary tales for kids.

JUSTIN KIRK: Brooke! Where are you?

UGO: I’m in New York, where are you?

JUSTIN: I’m in Santa Monica, California.

UGO: That’s far. Do you want to come over?

JUSTIN: I do!

UGO: Awesome, we’ll watch movies and braid hair.

JUSTIN: I’ll take the private jet. You’d be surprised how good I am at the hair braiding.

UGO: They take really good care of you, I guess.

JUSTIN: Yeah, I use the Showtime jet.

UGO: I want to work for Showtime.

UGO: I don’t think there is a Showtime jet.

JUSTIN: Yeah, I thought you were probably full of crap.

UGO: Well, there probably is one, I just don’t get to use it.

UGO: So, I’m so excited to be talking to you, Weeds is the only program that absolutely everybody at UGO can agree on.

JUSTIN: I hope they agree on it positively.

UGO: We agree that it’s awesome!

Let me start with a question that has been bothering me - because I fight with my co-worker Russell on this all the time. I think there is a peculiar tension between you and Nancy, and I don’t know if it’s sexual tension.

JUSTIN: I keep telling her it’s sexual tension.

UGO: But she disagrees?

JUSTIN: She just turns away.

UGO: So my theory, is Andy’s perspective on Nancy one of restraint or is he just genuinely disinterested from the familial vibe?

JUSTIN: Interesting, I would never say he was disinterested. I’d say that Andy’s lust and desires runs far and wide and anyone in their right mind would include Mary-Louise Parker on that list. I always used to think that it would be wrong for those characters to have anything like that go down but the thing about Weeds is that is always a new day.

UGO: And it includes a lot of wrong.

JUSTIN: It certainly includes a lot of wrong. I won’t give you too many spoilers, but we have sort of humorous problem along those lines in episode 4, so keep your eyes open.

UGO: So Alexander Gould, he was 11 when the show started…

JUSTIN: Actually he was ten! He was ten when they did the pilot.

UGO: Really? That makes this even creepier.

JUSTIN: Well, they did the pilot at least a year before the show was picked, but he’s 14 now.

UGO: A lot of your early scenes with him were… off-color. Was that a difficult adjustment for you to make? Did you buy his mom flowers?

JUSTIN: Well, I was dating his mom at the time.

UGO: That makes it easier!

JUSTIN: No, you know, we all the writers and everyone on the show make sure that everything is cool with everybody and everything has been “cool” as far as I’ve been told, though maybe that’s just what they tell me so I can get through the scene. But, yeah, there were times when it felt a little strange but that’s when good things happen, I guess.

UGO: It makes for excellent television. Did you see him on Law and Order SVU?

JUSTIN: No, but I heard about it, was he evil?

UGO: He wasn’t evil, he was just seriously f-d up. That’s what you did to him!

JUSTIN: I’m hoping that all over the country young parents are sitting their kids down with the Youtube videos and letting me do their work for them, really.

UGO: There has been some great casting throughout the run of the series, and lately its been amazing. I mean, an Olsen Twin, that’s fabulous, and Brooks is incredible. Is there anybody else coming up?

JUSTIN: We have Lee Majors coming up. Are you too young to know who Lee Majors is?

UGO: I’m in my 30s, bro, I know who Lee Majors is.

JUSTIN: That was exciting. We have Julie Bowen coming up, she was on a show called Ed with Tom Kavanaugh. She was also on Boston Legal. She’s awesome, gorgeous, funny, and plays Silas’s older love interest this season. She’s the mother of Rad and she owns a cheese shop and she and Silas hit it off.

UGO: That’s disturbing and awesome, thats great!

JUSTIN: I’m only a little jealous.

UGO: Do you have love interest this season?

JUSTIN: I feel like they’ve given me so much fun in that respect that I would find it greedy to ask for more, but there is stuff like that going on in the second half of the season that I won’t ruin for you.

UGO: But honestly, your rabbi love interest (Meital Dohan) was the most beautiful woman on the planet.

JUSTIN: That is a tough bar to live up to for any future love interest. She was perfect for the role and just awesome.

UGO: Are you a member of the tribe in real life?

JUSTIN: Only if it gets me somewhere. Only if it gets me to some Jewish country club.
