Demian Bichir Sheds Light on His ‘Weeds’ Character

One of the things to look forward to in the fourth season of Weeds is the introduction of Nancy Botwin’s (Mary-Louise Parker) new love interest in the form of Mexican superstar Demian Bichir.  As reported previously, the 44-year-old actor will be appearing on the Showtime series as someone who just might turn out to be Nancy’s ideal match when she moves to a rundown seaside California town near the Mexican border.

In an interview with TV Guide, Demian Bichir talks about what’s in store for his character on Weeds.

Warning: May contain spoilers.

So far, we already know that Bichir’s character’s name is Esteban Reyes, who serves as the mayor of Tijuana.  But Bichir reveals that there’s more to his character than meets the eye.

“He’s a pretty powerful politician.  He went to Harvard, he drinks the best wine, he loves opera.  He’s very sophisticated.  So that’s the interesting [truth] about this type of character, because you could always go to a stereotype, you know?  But this guy is like the devil: he’s powerful and charming and dangerous, and hopefully sexy,” Bichir told TV Guide.

On Monday’s episode, Bichir will finally make his debut on Weeds as Esteban.  He’ll be meeting Nancy when she appeals to him after Guillermo cheats out of her cut from the operation.

Whether or not sparks fly immediately, the chemistry between Esteban and Nancy is expected to be quite apparent as she finally meets a man to match her wits, work and passion.

“This guy is in many ways like Nancy Botwin.  Because, it’s not that you’re going be a bad guy, it’s just the way life turns you, and takes you toward a weird direction that you weren’t planning, so it’s someone that wants to do good for the people, but there are so many other underground activities. That’s how these two human beings meet,” he explained.

“It’s been a powerful relationship in many ways.  I don’t know exactly what direction the whole thing’s going to take, but right now, it’s much more than I had expected,” he added.
